The NIH is opening up its wallet again for epigenetic technology development. $3.5M will be allocated in 2010 for developing in vivo epigenetic imaging and analysis technologies. According to the grant description, the NIH has recognized that “… the technologies available to determine the epigenetic state of tissues in vivo are extremely limited. The specific purpose of this FOA is to develop revolutionary technologies that will enable in vivo imaging or analysis of epigenetic changes. The epigenetic features of interest include epigenetic marks, modifying enzymes, effector molecules, the activities of these molecules, or other measures of chromatin state. “
Some areas of interest include developing:
- Technologies for in vivo imaging of epigenetic modifications, modifying enzymes and/or epigenetic effector molecules
- Imaging tools that facilitate monitoring of epigenetic mod and/or enzymes at the cellular, tissues, and organ level
- Technologies that allow in vivo assessment of the epigenetic state in human tissues that are tough to come by
Of course they’ll take any other good ideas as well, but they’re looking some serious game changers so think big and make sure you print these dates out and stick them on your lab fridge door:
